Cycle to School Week 23rd to 27th September 2024

We want to let you know about an exciting opportunity to take part in our new cycling training project, the Bikeability Immersive VR Cycle Training.

This training can be delivered alongside your Bikeability courses and is delivered in a classroom format for up to 30 students, through an immersive tablet delivery, giving the students access to 24 different 360o videos. The training focuses on various different cycle skills and routes, encouraging observation skills. Our experienced Bikeability Instructors will deliver the 1-hour long session, and we will organise all the set up / breakdown of the delivery session. All we need is access to your students for the duration of their class time. This can also free up valuable time for your teachers as we need no input from the school for the delivery of the session, other than access to the classroom and students. Our Bikeability Instructors are fully DBS checked, Safeguarding and First Aid trained, as are the BCP Council Bikeability management team.

The training is completely free, just like our school Bikeability courses, and is a valuable way of increasing students’ cycle skills, by giving them real time cycling experience in a safe, controlled environment. Ideally, we would like to deliver this training to the whole year group, for years 5 and above and we could deliver this training to your entire year cohort in one school day, depending on the size of the school (max 150 students per day). Students don’t need to have completed their Bikeability practical training prior to attending the Immersive Training but we hope that it will encourage more students to take up Bikeability within school. This is not a replacement for Bikeability practical training but is designed to complement and enhance their learning.

Immersive Cycling Purpose

  • Enthuse students to cycle more, giving them more confidence and knowledge of safe road cycling
  • Prepare more students for Level 2 Residential Road / Level 3 Advanced Cycle Training
  • To help embed students’ knowledge of cycle skills, alongside the practical Bikeability training
  • Increase cycling uptake in your schools and improve road safety around school

There is a short survey at the beginning and end of the immersive cycle training delivery for the students, the results of which are completely anonymised with no specific personal data collected, which is used to gauge the skills of the students and hopefully their increased understand and knowledge following the completion of the training.

BCP Council was the first Training Provider to pilot this exciting new approach to cycle training at The Bourne Academy in July 2024, and we received national press coverage on the BBC News website. This new project is only initially being offered until March 2025, as it’s a Bikeability Trust pilot project, so if you would like your school to get this opportunity, please do book this in asap, as we anticipate there will be high demand for this training.

If your school would like to book in for some VR immersive cycle training, or you wish to book in your Bikeability training for your students for this year or to discuss anything further, please either contact your Bikeability School Course Coordinator, or email us at bikeaiblity@bcpcouncil.gov.uk.
