An interns point of view - working at Ted Webster Family Centre as a Facilities Assistant

An interns perspective written by Nathaniel Northover

Starting the rotation:

Following applying for the position, on the first day of rotation I was nervous and excited. I would be working with fellow intern Vicky who I get along with. For the first few weeks we were driven to rotation by our job coach, Helen.

Our other job coach, Steve, then carried out some travel training with us, which meant we could independently travel to the Ted Webster centre, where our placement is. I was surprised to see how close it was to Poole.

When we started, we met Kim, who is the facilities manager. He met us outside and at first, I thought he was a parent as he was helping a mum with her baby to the car.

The role:

First, Kim introduced us to fellow workers in the building, and showed us the jobs he would like us to do. These included cleaning the windows and sweeping up leaves on the footpath to prevent slips. We talked about how often jobs needed to be done, and he showed us the storage cupboards for the cleaning products.

We also helped to tidy the storage shed.

Our main role is to prepare the rooms ready for families to have time together and to maintain the building.

What I think:

I really enjoy the role, because it is quiet and fun to organise things. Vicky is fun to work with and we get on very well with the staff and they are friendly.
